Dubia 2010
World Short Course Venue:
As part of the lasting legacy of the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), the Dubai Municipality constructed a state of the art 15,000-seater multi-purpose sports venue. The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex - located on the Dubai Bypass Road.
This exceptional venue will see some of the world’s best swimmers taking to the water this December. With a capacity of 10,000 for these Championships, this is set to be an event to remember on Dubai’s ever-growing sports calendar.
This facility promises to be one of the largest and most technologically advanced in the world, boasting a 50m competition pool, a 25m dive pool, and a 50m warm up pool with a horseshoe-shaped seating bowl in the main arena. The size of the overall project is an impressive 24 hectares with the building itself occupying 56,031 square metres.
Once the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) have come to an end, the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex will serve as a hub for indoor sports in the Middle East – providing the region with its first 50m pool, in a multi-purpose setting which can be easily converted for sports such as basketball, handball and volleyball.
Dubai, and the United Arab Emirates, have already successfully hosted numerous international sporting events including the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, the Dubai Desert Classic golf championships, the richest horse race in the world – the Dubai World Cup and the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Abu Dhabi also recently played host to the prestigious Laureus Awards ceremony, where Italy’s Frederica Pellegrini and German sprinter Britta Steffen were among the nominees for World Sportswoman of the Year, and inspirational South African Natalie du Toit claimed the title of Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability.
