VICTORIA, Canada--
Former Pitt standout Warren Barnes garnered his first-career Canadian Swimming Title with a first-place finish at the 2010 Summer National Championships, currently held at the Saanich Commonwealth Place.
With just six spots left Thursday evening, Barnes added his name to the Canadian Pan Pacific Team roster, as he won the 100 breast with a 1:02.07 finish. He will now compete in the Pan Pacific Championships in August, as a member of the national team.
"This is definitely a memorable victory," Barnes said. "I was really focused on getting out fast but the difference this time was my second 50. I really held it together this time and I was able to make a big push in the last 10 meters. In the past, the second length has given me a lot of trouble." At the start of the day, Barnes held a seed time of 1:03.12 that had him finishing sixth on paper. However, Barnes turned in a personal best in prelims with a first-place time of 1:02.00. He nearly repeated his first-place finish from the morning session, when he stopped the clock at 1:02.07 in the finals.
"That was a really good race, but I would still like to go 1:01," Barnes said. Finishing second in the prelims was Richard Funk, who took bronze in the finals at 1:02.54. Barnes was chased by Scott Dickens in the finals, claiming a 1:02.14 second-place finish. Both Dickens and Funk are members of the national team, as well.
"We are so proud of Warren's accomplishments," Head Coach Chuck Knoles said. "His hard work and dedication have paid off. He is the Canadian National Champ in the 100 breast! That is quite an accomplishment.
"Were we able to rely on Warren for winning performances throughout his career as a Pitt Panther," Knoles added. "We believe there is more to come when he represents Canada at the Pan Pacific Championships". Barnes is a 2008 graduate from the University of Pittsburgh. He was voted team captain as a senior and earned the team's Most Valuable Swimmer Award that same season. Over 500 swimmers are competing at this week's National Championships. This meet is also the second qualification meet for the Pan Pacific Championships, held in Irvine, California from August 18th-22nd.
